WHAT YOU WILL LEARN FROM ME:
A camera is a tool. Whether you use it to record memories, as a creative outlet or for professional reasons, you have two choices: you either are the Master of your Camera or the camera takes the photographs for you.
To get an exposure all cameras use a combination of shutter speed (the length that light is let in) and aperture opening (the amount of light let in). The Shutter Speed Mode decides whether your subject is ‘frozen’ or blurred and the Aperture Mode decides how deep the focus is. Different combinations of these Modes produce extremely different effects.
If you shoot with your camera on Automatic the camera chooses the settings of these Modes for you. Therefore the camera is deciding how your photograph will turn out. The camera will always choose very ‘safe’ settings and so your photographs will always have pretty much the same feel to them.
Whereas, if you are the Master of your Camera, you are in complete control of how your photographs turn out. You also know how to ‘push’ the camera in difficult lighting conditions – which is when some of the best photographs can be taken.
If you have ever read a camera manual you know it is not so simple. I tried to learn that way and failed. I taught myself by approaching people with expensive cameras and asking them if they could explain to me what an f/stop was. (It was amazing how many people didn’t know!)
Eventually I understood how all the different aspects, features and functions of the camera work together - Once it all made sense the quality of my photography skyrocketed! The advent of digital means we can push this tool even further - if we know how to use it.
This is what I teach in my Master your Camera Workshops – HOW the camera works. I do it in a very logical way with slide presentations, notes, practical lessons, a brilliant memory peg and … homework! I give you ALL the knowledge I know and use when photographing. This includes Light Metering, Bracketing, Focusing, File Formats, ISO, White Balance, Lenses (and how to change them) and how to stand when shooting.
I have been a professional photographer for 20 years. I spent a long time in Viet Nam with photography as my soul income for 16 years. I have been holding workshops for 10 years. I trust that, once you have seen my work, you will know I am the Master of my Camera. To see whether I can 'walk the talk' please read my student's testimonials.
ONE-DAY MASTER YOUR CAMERA WORKSHOPS:
The One-Day Workshops are a combination of theory and practice held on Saturdays from 9.00 AM – 6.00 PM in different locations around the Mid-North Coast. The cost is $135 and maximum class size is 5 students.
See the CALENDAR for upcoming dates and locations.
Classes for private individuals or groups can be arranged for $480 for the day.
I highly recommended doing a Day Trip or a Field Trip after doing this workshop. These are followed by Creative Critiquing Evenings and will eventually culminate in an exhibition.
DAY TRIPS & FIELD TRIPS:
A Day Trip is a half or a full day outing to a location. A Field Trip includes an overnight stay. The price depends on what is involved.
Please click here for up coming trips. (Please note that this link has not been created yet. I am sourcing locations, figuring out costs and I think it might be better to wait for summer before we go camping! H.S. May 11th 2011)
